HostSailor Review

I’ve had my Host Sailor “Sailor” plan in their Netherlands location for a month.

The plan is $2.99 per month and has the following resources:

  • 1 E3-1240 CPU
  • 512mb RAM and vSwap
  • 25gb disk
  • 512gb transfer on 1Gbps
  • 1 IPv4 and /64 IPv6
  • OpenVZ/SolusVM

For an additional fee, DDOS protection is available.

There’s a lot of Netherlands VPS offers so I decided to try out Host Sailor.

I really like the fact they have a SSL certificate where some providers may not. I mean come on it’s 2016.

The signup was fast and quick, with the service deployed almost instantly. The network is reliable and the only issue I had was DBA – Databarn Amsterdam experienced an outage of some sort. I believe it was power related because the VPS has a little over 2 weeks of uptime.

The Databarn Amsteram location is fast. Providers like NFOrce (gameserver hosting) use it and if you put that keyword in a search engine, you’ll see a lot of providers trust that location for hosting service which says a lot with the options in the Netherlands.

Additionally, it appears Host Sailor has it’s own IP assignment on it’s IP addresses which is a great thing to look for as some providers could experience IP revoking if they lease/rent IPs from a data center and ARIN reassigns that IP space. With your own IP assignment, it allows you to migrate between physical locations without requiring IP address reissuing.

The network within Amsterdam to other Amsterdam facilities is fast. The speed is also very fast to Asia and also North America, making it optimal for a European point of presence for any service hosting needs. I use this VPS for a VPN and have no issues with speed while connected through the OpenVPN protocol.

The network speed test and disk I/O test is below-

Location Provider Speed
CDN Cachefly 100MB/s

Atlanta, GA, US Coloat 20.4MB/s
Dallas, TX, US Softlayer 18.6MB/s
Seattle, WA, US Softlayer 12.0MB/s
San Jose, CA, US Softlayer 13.5MB/s
Washington, DC, US Softlayer 9.03MB/s

Tokyo, Japan Linode 8.13MB/s
Singapore Softlayer 8.79MB/s

Rotterdam, Netherlands id3.net 109MB/s
Haarlem, Netherlands Leaseweb 103MB/s
Disk Speed
———-
I/O (1st run) : 716 MB/s
I/O (2nd run) : 1.0 GB/s
I/O (3rd run) : 933 MB/s
Average I/O : 550 MB/s

Conclusion:

Host Sailor is a great value for the money. I am very pleased with the $2.99/mo plan. The network speeds are fast, including to most areas on the Internet worldwide, and I haven’t had any issues. The support is reasonable also for the price I’m paying. If the quality continues, I’m almost certain that I will keep the service and may consider annual payment.

Congratulations to Alexander and his team at Host Sailor for the job well done.
